How Does Josh Make a Bracelet?

To make a bracelet, I start with a copper bar of whatever width the bracelet is going to be. I cut that down to the appropriate length and then round the edges with a metal file. I then use hammers with patterns on the heads to make most of the pieces, or use metal stamps to engrave the custom pieces. Next the copper is annealed with a blowtorch to make it softer, and bent to a shape where it will be comfortable on the wrist. Finally it is polished or a patina is added, according to the specifications of the bracelet.

Why Did Josh Pick the Name Marblehead Copperworks?

I live in Marblehead, and made my first pieces on my own in Marblehead. The first farmers market I attended as a vendor was the Marblehead Farmers Market. We make all of our pieces out of copper, hence the name.

Why Copper?

I think that copper is a beautiful metal, and is extremely fun to work with. While being cheaper than gold or silver, I think it can be just as stunning.

Fun Facts

Fun Facts

The Statue of Liberty is made from 179,000 pounds of copper.

All gold contains some level of copper, even 24 karat gold. This is because gold is so soft, it can be molded with the hands and calls for a bit of copper to be added.

Copper is naturally antibacterial. Brass doorknobs, handrails and fingerplates are excellent choices for public buildings and will prevent the spread of bacteria.

Copper is 100% recyclable and nearly 80% of the copper that has been produced is still in use today. Copper can continue to be recycled without any changes to its properties. In fact, it retains 95% of its original value.

Copper is often referred to as "man's eternal metal". It's highly durable, long lasting and can be used in all applications of life.

Copper has been used for as long as we can remember. The Egyptians had the ankh symbol to represent copper, and pyramids in Egypt used copper for water plumbing.

Although the Dead Sea Scrolls have been known to be made with rare animal skins, the one that was recovered contains copper.

A Little Wikipedia on Copper

Copper is a chemical element with symbol Cu (from Latin: cuprum) and atomic number 29.  Pure copper, which is what I make my jewelry from, is soft and malleable; a freshly exposed surface has a reddish-orange color.

The metal and its alloys have been used to make jewelry for thousands of years. In the Roman era, copper was principally mined on Cyprus, hence the origin of the name of the metal as aes сyprium (metal of Cyprus), later corrupted to сuprum, from which the word copper is derived.

Copper is essential to all living organisms as a trace dietary mineral because it is a key constituent of the respiratory enzyme complex cytochrome c oxidase. In molluscs and crustacea copper is a constituent of the blood pigment hemocyanin, which is replaced by the iron-complexed hemoglobin in fish and other vertebrates. The main areas where copper is found in humans are liver, muscle and bone.  Many people claim that copper bracelets impart health.  I don’t know about that, but I think they are cool to look at and to feel.
